Three Christmas Vacation Must-See Events

Christmas in Newton County is a magical time to spend with family and friends. Some of the things we love about the holiday season are the music and decorations. It doesn’t take much to start hearing your favorite tunes when you go to our must-see holiday events. The music combined with the lights and decorations will brighten up your spirits with love and joy!

Whether you come to visit us for Christmas vacation or take time to enjoy the holidays during a staycation, here are three must-see events in Newton County that will make treasured memories of fun and merriment.

The Lighting of Downtown Covington

There is something amazing about kicking off the holiday season with the Lighting of Downtown Covington, presented by the City of Covington, Newton County Board of Commissioners and High Priority Plumbing. Come see over 150,000 festive lights and decorations around the Square. The event creates a special atmosphere that is a must-see for you and your family. Get there early to hear the music from our local children’s choirs and musicians, brought to us by The Arts Association in Newton County. There will also be a fireworks display presented by the Facebook Newton Data Center. In addition, shops and restaurants will be open so you can start finding gifts while grabbing a bite to eat.

The Annual Christmas Parade and After Party

Every year people come to line the streets to watch the annual Covington Christmas Parade hosted by the Covington Lions Club. This wonderful tradition brings the community together with participation from businesses, schools, church groups, boy scouts, girl scouts, and many other organizations. It’s fun to see the floats and vehicles creatively decorated, but we know the highlight for every boy and girl is seeing Santa!

Stay for the Christmas Parade After Party presented by Newton Federal Bank and Peppers Heating and Air Conditioning Services, Inc. with High Priority Plumbing. You’ll find various activities on the Square such as pictures with Santa and Christmas karaoke. In addition, vendors will have items so you can shop for gifts.

The Nutcracker Ballet at Porter Performing Arts Center

One of the most loved traditions in Newton County is going to see The Nutcracker Ballet performed by the Newton Regional Ballet at Porter Performing Arts Center. The story of Claire following the Nutcracker in her dream never gets old. Just thinking about it brings visions of the enchanting Sugar Plum Fairy dancing around! The boys are sure to be fascinated as the toy soldiers battle the Mouse King and his army. Of course, the ballet will put smiles on little girls’ faces as they practice the postures en avant and en haut for days.

You’ll love the experience Newton County offers for the Christmas season. Make sure to take your little ones to see Santa and grab a cup of hot cocoa while walking around the decorated Square and shopping for gifts. When making your holiday plans, check out the many other activities we have on our calendar.
