Things To Do in Georgia: The NCRC and The Miracle League
When you are searching for things to do in Georgia that will warm your heart the Miracle League of Newton County immediately comes to mind. The mission of the Newton County Recreation Commission (NCRC) is to provide the use of recreation for people of all ages and abilities by providing the highest quality facilities to meet everyone’s needs. The NCRC definitely provides plenty of things to do in Georgia for those who enjoy outdoor and indoor team sporting activities.
The NCRC has 17 facilities that are spread throughout the county; programs include Cheerleading, Football, Baseball, Softball, Adult Flag Football and Adult Softball in the fall and numerous parks in Covington. Spring programs are Baseball and Softball and in the winter there’s Basketball for children and adults. If you are looking for something to do in the city of Covington, Georgia, the Newton County Recreation has programs for the whole family.
The NCRC partners with many groups such as the Newton County Chamber of Commerce, Newton Medical Center, YMCA, Elks Club, American Legion, Special Olympics, D.A.R.E. and Cousins Center, Inc. to name a few.
Tommy Hailey, the Director of the NCRC is bringing the Miracle League Baseball program to Newton County to serve mentally and physically challenged youth of the community. There are 2,700 special needs children in Newton County’s school system and other than this program there is no therapeutic recreational program for them.
A complex is currently being built in City Pond Park, one of the many parks in Covington, Ga. It will include a Miracle League field which will be completely handicapped accessible, an all inclusive playground and a concession restroom/building. The two multi-purpose fields built alongside the Miracle League field will ensure that able-bodied youth will be able to play with their Miracle League peers.
