One of the most relaxing things to do in Covington is the magnificent Lake Varner in the Cornish Creek Reservoir.  Relish in the natural outdoor scenery as you fish, picnic and take in Mother Nature.  This pristine lake has eight hundred acres of fresh water for recreation and bass fishing.  It is the perfect environment for kayaking, outdoorsmen or those who just simply wish to "unplug".  Lake Varner is open to the public April through October from 7am to 9pm and November through March 7am to 6pm. Lake Varner is overflowing with water dwellers any angler would want to reel in such as: Crappie, Redear Sunfish, Hybrid bass, Large Mouth Bass, and Pickerel Fish.  Just a reminder, all fishermen trying their sport at Lake Varner must abide by the State of Georgia Department of Natural Resources fishing rules and regulations. Boats with gasoline engines mounted on the transom are not allowed on the lake as the reservoir is supervised by the Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Division. This helps ensure quality drinking water for Newton and Walton County. Swimming or wading are prohibited as well. Admission to the reservoir is free to Newton and Walton County residents and only $5.00 per vehicle to out of county visitors.
