Cultural Tourism: The Arts Association in Newton County

To broaden their horizons, many people visit and move to the place they call home because of the arts. The Arts Association in Newton County offers cultural tourism in the form of art, music and theater activities throughout the year that are culturally diverse and entertaining. Many of the programs offered showcase the talents of our local youth and adults, so if you want to know how to get involved, show your support by attending any of the upcoming performances or exhibits.

True Colours Youth Art Exhibit

Throughout the month of March, local Downtown Covington businesses will feature artwork created by Newton County School System students during the True Colours Youth Art Exhibit. Come visit the downtown area to view the amazing talent of our youth. The exhibit is presented by Facebook Newton Data Center and hosted by The Arts Association in Newton County. To enhance your cultural tourism experience, vary your palate when you dine out for authentic cuisine at restaurants such as RL’s Off the Square (Cajun) or Osake - Japanese Hibachi and Sushi.

The Addams Family featuring Oxford Acting Co.

Come see upcoming performances of The Addams Family on March 20, 21 and 22 at the Porter Performing Arts Center. The Addams Family is a musical presented through special arrangement with Musical Theatre International and is performed by The Oxford Acting Company, which consists of 8th through 12th grade members.

Newton County Honor Jazz Band

If you haven’t seen the Newton County Honor Jazz Band, you are in for a treat! The free concert will be held on the Square in Downtown Covington on Friday, March 27, 2020 from 6 pm to 7pm. Bring your lawn chairs and grab a spot on the Square to listen and relax as you hear the sounds of the band. There are also plenty of restaurants to grab a bite to eat while you enjoy the evening. For to-go orders that you can easily grab and go on your way to the concert, try Your Pie or Bread and Butter Bakery and Cafe.

88 Keys - An International Piano Day Concert

Come celebrate the piano and everything about it when you attend 88 Keys – An International Piano Day Concert. Piano Day is celebrated in many cultures worldwide as an annual event held on the 88th day of the year (March 29, 2020). The 88th day is significant because it represents the number of keys on the piano. The concert will occur from 3 pm to 4pm at the Porter Performing Arts Center. It’s free with a donation to Young Artists Scholarships.

How to Get Involved

The Arts Association in Newton County hosts several programs that boost cultural tourism in our area. The Covington Regional Ballet is the dance performance arm of the association’s Young Artists Programs, with a school and production company. To get involved, auditions for the company are held throughout the year for students ages 8 to 18. Another popular group for involvement is The Oxford Singers, a group of auditioned choirs for grades Kindergarten through 12th with students from 50 different schools and 8 surrounding counties. In addition, acting classes are available for youths to become a member of Theatre Covington.

Consider joining the association as a sponsor, exhibitor or performer. To learn more about programs offered, make a donation or purchase tickets for upcoming performances, visit https://www.newtoncountyarts.org/.
