BRAG Set to Cycle and Stay in Covington
Welcoming Cyclists with Authentic Southern Hospitality
Covington-Newton County welcomes cyclists from BRAG (Bicycle Ride Across Georgia), as they celebrate their 40 year anniversary of covering routes leading far and wide across the peach state. Arriving in Covington on Monday, June 3rd, members of this not-for-profit organization will be camping out at Indian Creek Middle School and coming to see what we offer in the form of southern hospitality, rest and relaxation.
BRAG appeals to a diverse demographic, inviting young and old, professionals and beginners, to indulge in a fun fitness adventure while discovering the hidden gems nestled in the quaint suburbs of Georgia. Their focus is to build community through athleticism, pushing each other to go the extra mile while weaving entertainment and leisure into the mix through the backroad landscapes of Georgia.
Covington is the third stop on the Big BRAG trek, with participants travelling approximately 74 miles from Gainesville. “Piedmont Hospital, presenting sponsor for the BRAG stop here locally, is looking forward to having EMS staff onsite around noon as bicyclists arrive from their travels to provide first aid or medical treatment to anyone in need”, commented Andrea Lane, Piedmont Newton’s Director of Community Services. Emory of Oxford College will have water and fruit on hand for sustenance as well. As everyone recuperates from the sweltering temperatures with food fuel brought in by Bradley’s BBQ, Silver Queen and Scoops while setting up camp for the evening, shuttles will operate every 30 minutes from Indian Creek, bringing visitors to scope out the downtown scene and get a taste of small-town living.
BRAG bike riders will be looking to unwind and let loose a little, taking in the sites and sounds of delightful Downtown Covington. They are encouraged to grab a map from Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce’s hospitality tent and take a self-guided walking tour or two around town, such as The Walk of Stars or the Covington Cemetery Tour. Be sure to extend a warm hello if you’re a native and happen to see someone in cycle apparel, representing their collegiate team of choice as bikers will be participating in College Spirit Day while here in Covington.
A special treat is in store before cyclists retire back to camp, hosted by Piedmont Newton and Main Street Covington. Bicycles & Beats will feature the eclectic music stylings of Chris, Jon, and Scott for an evening on the Square around 7:00 PM, where cyclists and locals can mingle amongst each other while feeling the funky fresh beats of this hometown favored band of musicians.
